rjdj: the most amazing iphone app

November 23rd, 2008

I have my iphone for more than a year now, but only recently upgraded to the new firmware with access to the App Store. A new world opened for me. I have been trying out a bunch of (free and paid) apps, but so far one has ruled them all: RjDj. You know it is revolutionary when something is impossible to describe it. Even the embedded YouTube video does not really do it justice. It’s cliche, but RjDj is an experience. An aural feast for the ears, giving the word soundscape a new layer of meaning.

In One Fine Spring Day, a wonderful movie by Korean director Hur Jin Ho, the male protagonist’s job is to record ambient sounds – the waving of the trees, the wind blowing through a bamboo forest, the river slowly going downstream. One wonders, where does sound begins, and music ends? RjDj registers, records, and samples the ambient sounds in your environment, further blurring the distinction between sound and noise and turning it all into music. McLuhan once wrote about media as the extension of man. With RjDJ and the iphone, you just got yourself a brand new pair of ears.

So what is RjDj? Perhaps the best way I can describe it is this: if you were looking for the soundtrack of your life, this is it.

book and sword : gratitude and revenge

is the first novel written by Jin Yong. The protagonist is Chan Ka Lok, who is the leader of the Red Flower Society. The book title refers to Ka Lok being famous for being well-versed in culture and martial arts, but also for having to make a difficult ethical decision. My father named me and my brother after him.

The subtitle is from a poem Desiderata
