when your taste in music has no place here

March 6th, 2007

I just joined a group at Facebook called Trancehead. Its slogan is: “For those of us who came to Philly and realized that our taste in music had no place here.” That’s so me, and apparently, about 27 other people at Penn. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.

One of the few times I realize I am more “European” than I thought I was, is when I say “electronic music” and people either give me a “huh?” or pull ugly faces.

Or, when in a conversation, all kinds of electronic music is called “techno”. No dear people, trance is not techno. House is not techno. Drum & Bass is not techno. Electronica is not techno!! *shakes fist*

Some folks at Last.fm still describe the (European) electronic music scene as Eurodance. What do you think about that? :|

I completely agree with you. In San Francisco where I lived in the early ’90s, the techno scene was vibrant. When I moved to Minneapolis, less so, but still some possibilities. But, Philly. Dead when it comes to Techno. I didn’t get it when I lived there. You’d think such a large city would invite a range of musical genres, but apparently not techno . . . .

For real, most people (especially you’re covering all age groups, not just ours) don’t know what “electronic” means. Frankly, techno is nearly extinct. Most ppl don’t know what EDM is. And even EDM has so many sub-genres, like Progressive Trance, Progressive House, Tech House, Funk House, Psy-Trance, etc etc. Siiiiigh, just give up & get ur E fill elsewhere la…

is the first novel written by Jin Yong. The protagonist is Chan Ka Lok, who is the leader of the Red Flower Society. The book title refers to Ka Lok being famous for being well-versed in culture and martial arts, but also for having to make a difficult ethical decision. My father named me and my brother after him.

The subtitle is from a poem Desiderata
