calendar project picked by Yahoo!
The Wong Kar-Wai Calendar Project – Yahoo! Picks for January 27, 2007.
The calendar project started out as a typical bottom-up fan community driven idea. On a micro level, it is a typical example of Yochai Benkler’s Commons Based Peer Production, a fancy word for the concept that a lot of successful internet projects are characteristically non-market based (e.g. non-commercial), collaborative and de-centralized. The internet amplifies the energy of passionate people in bringing them together, and allowing them to canalize their attention into collaboration of a project where its value is more than the sum of its parts.
The project has gone a long way. From what is now the classic April Fool’s version of the April 2005 calendar, to being mentioned on Greencine, to now being a Yahoo! Pick.
Congratulations to the Wong Kar Wai community.
