coming up: welcome to dongmakgol

April 8th, 2006

Have been seeing a few movies at the Philly filmfest already – the next one is Welcome to Dongmakgol, a movie my cousin Yin already watched and it did not do much for him. Hope I have better luck!

EDIT: having seen it, i really liked it. it had a strong miyazaki hayao feel to it, but then with real life actors.

Though I thought the ending was rather silly, if was full of very very beautiful scenes and moments. And the Miyazaki feel might have something to do with the score by Joe Hisaishi. Worth seeing if just for the scene of Kang Hye-Jung in the rain!

ha, joe hisaishi! no wonder. but don’t you think thematically, the longing and nostalgia for a purer past where people lived peacefully together is also very miyazaki?

Some awkward scenes and the ending spoiled the film (for me). I’m just very particular in how a film ends :-)
Off topic: Has LokHin sent you Taste of Tea yet?

ps i fell asleep during the ending – i have no idea how it ends! sometimes things are for the better. :)

Taste of Tea, now there’s a film with a wonderfully moving ending! (and just a wonderfully moving film as a whole)

And you’re right, although it didn’t really occur to me while watching it, the whole film is very Miyazaki-ish. Not just about how people live peacefully with eachother but also in relation to nature and the world around them, and how industrialization/war destroys that relationship.

book and sword : gratitude and revenge

is the first novel written by Jin Yong. The protagonist is Chan Ka Lok, who is the leader of the Red Flower Society. The book title refers to Ka Lok being famous for being well-versed in culture and martial arts, but also for having to make a difficult ethical decision. My father named me and my brother after him.

The subtitle is from a poem Desiderata
