The big idea is that journalists need freedom of press, freedom of speech in order to be protected when they perform their watchdog function – speaking up against those who abuse power naturally carries danger within. Technically then, there should be a correlation between the degree of protection and the fearlesness of exposing injustice. So how come journalists in China and Iraq, both with a press system that allows for far less freedom than the US, are more brave in exposing injustice than US journalists, who rarely, if at all, dare to ask the questions we need them to ask?
