A Long Way Down

Just finished reading Nick Hornby’s latest novel – A Long Way Down (thanks James). His book starts with a quote by Elizabeth McCracken — ”The cure for unhappiness is happiness, I don’t care what anyone says”. Considering that happiness and unhappiness are really two sides of the same coin – this duality – does it mean that the solution is in the problem itself? Built in the architecture of unhappiness is the exit to happiness?

It reminds me of my question a while ago to my classmate Mag (whom I miss dearly these days). It was crunch time and I could not get myself to focus and write my papers – asking her how she coped with this, she said: “just sit down and work, Lok. And don’t get up.”

is the first novel written by Jin Yong. The protagonist is Chan Ka Lok, who is the leader of the Red Flower Society. The subtitle is from a poem Desiderata
